It is believed that the origins of this magnificent chateau date back as early as the 9th century. There is no doubt that the castle held a position of great importance as once upon a time, money was minted within its walls.
The exterior of the tower was altered in the 12th century when the wonderful bell tower was added, and around the time of the 15th century, it was joined to a building in pure Renaissance Flemish style in a hammer shape on the side that overlooks the moat. .Later in the 18th Century the castle was restored using local bricks.
In the 1830s the part used as a prison was demolished. In the basement is a 'shooting seat' where the archers used to take position to defend the moats. Later it was bricked up but the room has kept its fault with crossed and fortified ribs. The chateau is an excellent example of elegant pure architecture with harmonious lines.
The present owners enlarged the Chateau in the early 2000's with the addition of an independent stone building which has 15 suites and rooms, spacious reception rooms and an underground garage with capacity for 15 vehicles.
