Magnificent Medieval Château with Rich History and Stunning Architecture
Perched on a promontory overlooking a cool, deep valley near Agen, this remarkable medieval château boasts 15 main rooms and over 600 m² of living space across four levels. Set within 3.64 hectares of grounds, it features breath-taking views of the rolling hills of the Lot-et-Garonne region, as well as a wealth of architectural history and meticulously preserved details.
Architectural Highlights
Dating back to the 12th century as a fortified villa, the château’s original structure included cantilevered watchtowers. In the late 13th or early 14th century, a square defensive tower with cross-shaped loopholes was added. During the 15th and 16th centuries, the property was further expanded, including the construction of a chapel with a flat chevet and a defensive wall. The 17th-century renovations introduced a courtyard wing with mullioned windows and two semi-circular portals adorned with classical columns, and substantial outbuildings adding elegance to its defensive origins.
The château’s layout includes a basement with a guardroom and dungeons, while the expansive attic space offers potential for conversion.
Panoramic views can be enjoyed from the loggia and multiple terraces, which include a ready-to-develop area for a swimming pool between the château and the chapel.
Preserved and Restored with Care
Saved from destruction during the French Revolution by local villagers, the château has been lovingly restored since 1963 by a chief architect of historic monuments. The restoration adhered to strict historical standards, earning it recognition as a listed Historic Monument in 1964 and full classification in 1988.
Chapel of Saint Pierre and Grounds
Adjacent to the château, the restored chapel of Saint Pierre stands as a testament to the property’s religious and historical significance. Once the village church, it features a flat apse, cross-vaulted bays, and escutcheons bearing the Beauville family coat of arms, a lineage that owned the château from the 13th to 16th centuries.
The property includes an enclosed courtyard surrounded by the château
Other outbuildings include:
- a caretaker’s cottage
- former stables
- additional outbuildings such as a woodshed and dovecote.
The expansive grounds, spanning over 3.6 hectares, include wooded areas and open spaces, providing privacy and a connection to nature.
